SUBJECT

PSHE & RSE

KS3 Subject Intent

The intention of PSHE at KS3 is to provide all students with a broad spectrum of all the topics that the Government has outlined. Students study a spiral curriculum and each term’s lesson will focus on either Health and Wellbeing, Living in the Wider World, and RSE. Students as they progress through the keystage will develop a more critical view of these with a key focus on how these topics affect themselves, others and the wider community. The intent of this key stage is to develop students into aspirational, well-rounded individuals.

KS4 Subject Intent

The intention of PSHE at KS4 is to build upon the wide range of topics that they have looked at in KS3 by going into more depth in certain circumstances and in a more age-appropriate way in others. Students as they progress through the keystage will use critical thinking to formulate their own, educated view of the world and the way they interact with it. Their cultural literacy will enhance throughout the key stage so by the end of it they are exposed to a world that they are well-prepared for rather than being daunted by it.

Curriculum Overview

PSHE is delivered in 1-hour timetabled lessons once a fortnight, through a weekly 30-minute tutor session, Science lessons, and assemblies. Lessons are led by form tutors and assembly content is delivered by Heads of Year and expert external visitors.

Lesson Topics

Tutor Lessons
The curriculum is supported by 30-minute tutor sessions looking to embed knowledge on Wellbeing, Keeping Safe, Understanding the Law, and Relationships. This has been designed by West Yorkshire Police (Pol-Ed) and written by teachers to keep children safe by developing their understanding of risks, consequences and the law and to develop their resilience and ability to help and support each other. The table below sets out the content of the programme.
