SUBJECT

Maths

At Redbridge Community School, our intention is for every student to become a confident, resilient and capable mathematician who understands the power and relevance of mathematics in everyday life and beyond the classroom. We want our students to develop a genuine appreciation of the subject, recognise its importance in future education and employment, and have the knowledge and skills to approach mathematical challenges with confidence.

Our curriculum is built around the White Rose Maths mastery approach, which provides a carefully sequenced journey through mathematics from Year 7 to Year 11. We believe that all students can make progress in mathematics when learning is structured effectively, misconceptions are addressed and students are given opportunities to develop both fluency and deeper understanding.

A carefully sequenced curriculum

Our curriculum is organised into coherent blocks of learning, broken down into small, manageable steps. New concepts build upon prior knowledge, allowing students to make connections between different areas of mathematics and develop a secure understanding before progressing to more complex ideas. Key concepts are revisited throughout the curriculum to strengthen retention, address misconceptions and support long-term learning.

At Key Stage 3, we focus on establishing secure foundations in number, algebra, ratio, proportion, geometry, statistics and probability. This provides students with the essential knowledge and skills needed to access increasingly challenging mathematics. At Key Stage 4, students build on these foundations, developing the mathematical fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills required for GCSE success and future study.

Teaching for mastery

The White Rose Maths approach emphasises depth of understanding rather than simply moving quickly through content. We want students to understand why mathematical methods work, not just memorise procedures. Through carefully modelled examples, purposeful practice, questioning and mathematical discussion, students are encouraged to explain their thinking, recognise patterns and make connections.

Our teaching promotes three essential strands of mathematical learning:

  • Fluency: developing accuracy, confidence and efficiency when working with mathematical concepts and procedures.
  • Reasoning: explaining methods, justifying conclusions and making logical connections.
  • Problem-solving: applying knowledge to unfamiliar situations, interpreting information and persevering with challenging problems.

We also use visual representations and different approaches to help students move from concrete and pictorial models towards abstract mathematical thinking. This supports conceptual understanding and helps students recognise that mathematics is a connected subject rather than a collection of unrelated topics.

High expectations for every student

We are committed to ensuring that all students have access to an ambitious mathematics curriculum. The mastery approach enables teachers to identify gaps in understanding, address misconceptions and adapt learning to meet students’ needs. Opportunities for consolidation support those who need additional time, while extension and deeper problem-solving provide challenge for students ready to explore ideas further.

We want every student to feel that mathematics is achievable, regardless of their starting point. By developing positive learning habits, resilience and a willingness to learn from mistakes, we aim to build students’ confidence and independence as mathematicians.

Mathematics for life

Mathematics is essential for understanding and engaging with the world around us. Throughout the curriculum, students develop the skills to interpret data, manage money, understand proportion, evaluate information and make informed decisions. These skills are valuable not only for GCSE examinations but also for further education, employment and everyday life.

Ultimately, our aim is for students to leave Redbridge Community School as confident and independent learners who can apply their mathematical knowledge accurately, reason logically and approach unfamiliar challenges with resilience. We want them to recognise the opportunities that mathematics opens up and to be equipped with the skills and confidence to succeed in their next steps and beyond.
